Hidangan Baru Restaurant

My friend invited me to eat at his favorite Padang food at Hidangan Baru restaurant which located in Gajah Mada street, Central Jakarta. I have never heard about this restaurant before so I was quite excited to try it.

The array of Padang food.

Not as much as in the other Padang restaurants.

We chose what we want to eat and it was delivered to our table:
Jengkol - Rp. 25.000
Bilis - Rp. 35.000
Keripik Kentang - Rp. 25.000
Rendang - Rp. 22.000/ piece
Fried chicken - Rp. 23.000/ piece
White rice - Rp. 8.000
Vegetable - Rp. 15.000
Current currency:
1 USD = Rp. 15.100

Overall, the food tasted very good but the spices was pretty mild. As for the prices, it's more expensive compared to the Padang restaurants that I usually go.

Soto Padang Bunda

As I mentioned on my last week "Soto H. St. Mangkuto" post, I went to another famous place for  Soto Padang named Bunda. It is located in Bendungan Hilir or more known as Benhil area.

Cindy, Jenz and I had to wait until 1 pm before we could have our lunch because it was on a Friday. On Fridays, this restaurant only opens after 1 pm because of Sholat Jumat (Friday Prayers).

As soon as I entered into this restaurant, I could smell the aroma of cloves. Hmmm.... Nice!

Soto Padang Daging - Rp. 23.000
Compared to Soto Padang Mangunkuto, this soto wasn't so oily and tasted rather bland for me.

The ingredients of the beef broth is the same. It got small pieces of fried beef, vermicelli, and also fried potato dumpling.

I asked for a bowl of the beef broth only. Interestingly, it tasted different than the complete Soto Padang bowl. From this broth, I could taste the herbs like the cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. It was really tasty!

Rice  with pink rice crackers - Rp. 5.000

Teh Telor/ Teh Talua - Rp. 12.000
Sweet and a bit creamy, made from egg yolk, sugar, hot tea and lime.
Current currency:
1 USD = Rp. 9.805

Location:
Soto Padang Bunda

Jakarta Pusat
Telp: 5704513

Opening hours: 8 am - 9 pm (except for Friday)

Soto Padang H. St. Mangkuto

Last week, after I tweeted about Soto Padang from the Artisanal Minangkabau Culinary Experience Press Conference, Natalia (Daniel's girlfriend) replied to my tweet. She told me about Soto Padang Mangkuto which according to her mom is one of the best Soto Padang in Jakarta. I got quite curious :) Thus, today, I went together with Natalia to have  Soto Padang Mangkuto for lunch.

Inside the restaurant.

 Rice  (1/2 portion) - Rp. 4.000
The pink rice crackers on rice

Soto Padang - Rp. 26.000
Beef broth with small pieces of fried beef, vermicelli, and Frikadeller (fried potato dumpling).

Red chili paste to add the flavor and spiciness.

Paru - Rp. 12.000 (3 small pieces)
We also had Paru (beef lung) to accompany our Soto Padang.
Current currency rate:
1 USD = Rp. 9.775
All prices are subjected to 10% tax.

Tell you the truth, this was my second time eating Soto Padang. It tasted different than my first Soto Padang at the Artisanal Minangkabau Culinary Experience. The aroma of cloves and cinnamon was pretty strong compared to Soto Padang Mangkuto which got a very mild aroma. I like both of them. Well, next week, there's a plan to try another famous Soto Padang in Central of Jakarta. I definitely will post about it, so stay tune ;)

Street Food Hunting with Steven Goh

Steven Goh, a Malaysian blogger who writes about Penang's food, travel and lifestyle was in Jakarta for a business trip. I met him and his colleague on their first night in Jakarta.

Steven was quite eagerly to try some the street food. So, I brought them around my neighborhood.

We began with Pisang Goreng Kalimantan (Borneo Fried Banana) from Pontianak.

The frying.

They deep fried the banana twice. To add the crunchiness?

Pisang Kepok is the type of banana.

Sweet, fragrant and soft... Definitely crunchy on the outside :)

Then, we moved to the next stall.

Sate Padang, originally from Padang, West Sumatra.

You can choose the part of beef you want: meat, tongue, intestine, liver.

Grilled.

Rice cake (Ketupat).

The sauce is made from a lot of spices (turmeric, curry powder, coriander, cumin, galangal, garlic, chili, salt, pepper then mixed with rice flour)

Fried shallots on the top.

Spicy potato chips and fried beef rind known as Dorokdok.

If you like you can ask to add the spicy potato chips on the Sate Padang

And of course, they will add more sauce on it.
Yummm.... I could only drool since I can't eat spicy food anymore

After Steven finished eating the Sate Padang with full of sweat all over his face because the spiciness of the Sate Padang sauce, we found a cart of another type of satay.

Sate Ayam & Sate Kambing (Chicken & Mutton Satays) from Madura, an island beside East Java.

The old school's way to grill satay on charcoal, using "hand fan" to keep the flame burning.

After the satays were grilled.

Peanut sauce mixed with sweet soy sauce.

Always... my favorite type of satay.

On the top, fried shallots added the deliciousness of these chicken satays.

Look how Steven and James were capturing a plate of Sate Ayam. I think the Sate Ayam vendor was pretty flattered to see how these two guys got so passionate capturing his food  :)

After the meaty food, now it's time for something sweet.

"Sinar Bulan" Martabak Manis Special

Indonesian version of thick pancake. This famous martabak manis is well-known in Bangka, a small island in east Sumatra.

Making the batter and also the martabak.

Big size and medium size.

We ordered for the special Martabak which means pure butter (Wijsman brand) with shredded cheese, chocolate sprinkles, ground peanuts and sesame seeds.

So rich, buttery, sweet, salty... One word to describe it... Delicious!!!

After all the food, we needed something to drink. Coincidentally, on the way back, we saw a new Taiwanese franchised tea store.

Shiny Tea

Thus, we ended up our street food hunting journey with milk teas :)

Boba Milk Tea and White Pearl Milk Tea.

It was a fun night! Nice meeting you in person, Steven and James!
