Tukang Cilok Telor

There was a man selling Cilok Telor every afternoon in front of the gate of the complex where I work. Many people especially children love to buy this snack.

Cilok (aci dicolok) is a west Java snack, made from tapioca flour and shape into little balls to become tapioca balls that put through skewer.

Cilok

The Cilok are deep into whisked egg then deep fried in hot oil.

Fried Cilok with eggs.

Many kind of seasonings powder (BBQ, cheese, salt, and red chili) for Cilok.

1 skewer Cilok = Rp. 1.000
It tasted savory and got chewy texture.

Tukang Kue Pancong (Bandros)

Before the Working From Home was implemented because of the Covid-19 pandemic, I usually would see this Tukang Kue Pancong with his cart on the street every morning on the way to my working place. He started to make and sell the kue Pancong from 6.00 am until the latest 10.00 am. Most of the time, at 9.30 am, he would stop to make it because the batter already gone.

Kue Pancong (some people also known it as Bandros) is an Indonesian traditional snack from West Java that is made of  rice flour and coconut milk.

The special mold pan to make the Kue Pancong.

The very simple ingredients which are only rice flour, coconut, water and salt.

Besides the special mold pan, it also needs a special hook.

This is how the tukang kue pancong used the hook.

Drizzle with some sugar on the top of warm Kue Pancong.
It tasted yummy!

Tukang Tahu Bulat (Round Tofu)

"Tahu Bulat... Tahu Bulat... Digoreng dadakan... Lima ratusan... Gurih gurih nyoi...." This is the advertisement played by a tape-recorder on the pick-up car which means Round Tofu, fried on the spot, five hundred (the price of one tofu), tasty tasty nyoi...

The round tofu being fried.

Beside the round tofu, there's also otak-otak (similar to fish cake).

1 piece = Rp. 500.

Nasi Uduk Jl. Buni, Tanjung Duren branch.

This Nasi Uduk place in Tanjung Duren area is the branch from the original place at Jl. Buni, in Mangga Besar area which was opened since 1958.

Nasi Uduk - Rp. 8.000
Aromatic from the coconut milk and fried shallot.

Fried Chicken - Rp. 19.000 (1 pc.)
I like this crunchy fried chicken with the crumbles of the grated coconut flakes. Too bad the size of the chicken is small.

Jengkol (similar to stinky beans)
The texture is similar to potato but a bit chewy.
It is cooked with Sweet soy sauce.

Ketupat Sayur - Rp. 13.000 (1/2 portion)
Rice cake with tofu, squash, and coconut milk.
 1 USD = Rp. 14.240

Hidangan Baru Restaurant

My friend invited me to eat at his favorite Padang food at Hidangan Baru restaurant which located in Gajah Mada street, Central Jakarta. I have never heard about this restaurant before so I was quite excited to try it.

The array of Padang food.

Not as much as in the other Padang restaurants.

We chose what we want to eat and it was delivered to our table:
Jengkol - Rp. 25.000
Bilis - Rp. 35.000
Keripik Kentang - Rp. 25.000
Rendang - Rp. 22.000/ piece
Fried chicken - Rp. 23.000/ piece
White rice - Rp. 8.000
Vegetable - Rp. 15.000
Current currency:
1 USD = Rp. 15.100

Overall, the food tasted very good but the spices was pretty mild. As for the prices, it's more expensive compared to the Padang restaurants that I usually go.

Tukang Kue Rangi (Sago cake)

I was passing this small alley on my way home and saw this man selling Kue Rangi. I seldom see this Kue Rangi seller so I couldn't resist to buy it.

Kue Rangi is made from tapioca starch or sago starch mixed with grated coconut.

Drizzled with brown sugar on the top.

It's crunchy but also chewy. Better to be eaten while it's warm because it becomes hard when it's cold.

Bakso Akiaw 99 Mangga Besar

I just had an early dinner at Super Suikiaw in Mangga Besar area when my friend mentioned a famous place for meatballs (bakso), which located across from the Super Suikiaw.

I got curious and wanted to try it so I went there directly although I was still feeling full.

The place was totally packed! No Air-conditioner!
It was hard to find an empty table so we had to share our table and seat together with other people.

We ordered the meatballs, sliced beef with rice vermicelli - Rp. 42.000

The beef meatballs were springy and pretty tasty but the sliced beef was so sweet.
The beef broth was good, not too salty nor too oily.

Love the coriander leaves and fried shallot but not that hard and dry rice vermicelli.

1 USD = Rp. 13.475

Location:
Bakso Akiaw 99
Jalan Mangga Besar Raya No. 2B,
